First.
Good deal for both teams....except that I am not sure I see Suzuki turning into more than a middle-six forward. This helps Montreal save face a bit and VGK replace Perron for one year.
Montreal was in a situation that was untenable and every team out there knew it. It’s a contract year and Patches will likely light it up. |

So, In the end McPhee ends up trading
2017 1st - (Nick Suzuki)
2018 1st
2019 2nd
2021 3rd - (Tomas Tatar)
2019 2nd from Columbus
For Max Pacioretty
2 1sts, 2 2nds, and a 3rd for a guy in the last year of his contract looking for 8 x 8 million on his next deal

Tatar trade was a bust, playoffs proved that. Those 3 picks are history. So a 2nd pick, a high prospect, and salary dump for Patches. I'd say this is win now mode. Save for last year, Patches has proven to be a consistent 30-40 goal scorer. He has to be pumped to be out of Montreal! |

Yeah, the original Tatar makes this look bad, but the trade itself isn't terrible considering Tatar struggled under Gallant and Vegas is getting a guy who can score 30 goals. I think Pacioretty will regain his form now that he's no longer on the microscope. He does turn 30 this year so I wonder what kind of contract offer he'll get from the Knights |

After what McPhee gave up for Tatar idk
1st
2nd
2nd
3rd
Suzuki
Is the total cost. Thx to a poster in our blog for that info. That’s a ton to give up & let Neal walk for nothing instead of resigning. |

Not sure they wanted Neal back. His deal in Calgary isn't a bad one. Patches is better and younger. They moved Tatar and are not paying Neal and Perron. Should have room to patches if they want to keep him. |

Price'y (yeah!) but great addition for VGK - pretty sure we will see a signed contract within the next days. |

with that blue line, was sacrificing a major young asset like Suzuki for another forward really a priority?

Great deal for Montreal.
Only way this works out for Vegas if "Patches" profits greatly from the Golden Knights secret 'supplement' programme.. |

This is a great breakdown of the deal from the Vegas perspective with all of the pros and cons reviewed.
I thought, when I saw the deal, that Vegas made a steal. Tatar never fit in. Getting something now rather than trying to force him into a system that he doesn't work well in...that part of asset reclamation I approve of. The fact that they were able to package him for Pacioretty is fairly remarkable. It does speak volumes about how well Suzuki is seen in Montreal, or how much they really wanted this ordeal to be over.
This is a deal that won't really be finished until after Suzuki has played in the NHL. Even the 2nd rounder, which could be important, isn't as key imho as how Suzuki plays, and that may be two years away. |

I think both the Canadiens and Senators have been asking Vegas for Suzuki for awhile and Vegas finally relented when Montreal agreed to take Tatar off their hands, which Ottawa never would have done. |

The Tatar trade was a big miss, but this trade, in a vacuum, is a good deal for VGK. |

George Macphee... great at expansion draft, terrible at trading.
It's not a massive over payment but I just don't understand letting Neal walk for nothing and then trading away one of your top 2 prospects for a similar winger. Combine this with the Tatar trade and yikes!
Vegas is due for a big regression this season. Only thing saving them is Gallant is a great coach. Karlsson isnt going to put up 40 goals again and Marssechault & Smith are going to regress. They threw the long term plan out the window quickly...

I'll add this too... Tatar will be better for Montreal than Pacioretty was last season and he might even put up better numbers than him this year. |

Agreed, but I always felt they way overpaid for Tatar or at the least gave up too many futures too early on in their development as a team for a player they didn’t really need.
While this is still an overall overpayment, I think it’s better to overpay for Pac than Tatar. |

I think they panicked at the deadline after missing out on the other players that got moved. But I fully expect them to sign Pacioretty to an awful contract. McPhee will drive this team into the NHLs basement. |

There are so many what-ifs surrounding this team, but also, they should be in the basement for a bit.
Maybe my thought-process is outdated, but they need at least a few years of drafting high to really start cultivating talent instead of just making replacement moves every season which is where I feel they’re heading. |
